Things to Do in Canmore and Banff

Hello readers, friends, and fellow travelers,

If you couldn’t tell from our recent blog posts, we visited Banff National Park last month for a wedding. It was an incredible trip filled with breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable memories.

If you’re planning a visit and looking for ideas on what to do, be sure to check out our previous posts about the trip:

Past Blogs

In our last blog, I went into detail about the hikes we completed, but I also wanted to provide a broader overview of our experience. Whether you’re staying in Canmore, Banff, or exploring the surrounding area, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy.

Explore Downtown Canmore

Take some time to wander through the charming streets of downtown Canmore. With local boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and mountain views around every corner, it’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon.

I really enjoyed downtown Canmore—honestly, even more than downtown Banff. It felt a little less crowded and more authentic, while still offering plenty of shopping, dining, and beautiful scenery.

Tip: Be sure to check out Big Bear Trading Co., Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe, Mountain Mercantile, and Stonewaters Home Elements.

Explore Downtown Banff

Downtown Banff offers a lively atmosphere with unique shops, restaurants, and stunning scenery. Whether you’re browsing local stores, enjoying a meal with a mountain backdrop, or simply strolling down Banff Avenue, there’s plenty to see and do.

I will say that downtown Banff felt a bit more touristy than Canmore, but it’s still worth exploring and offers a great mix of shopping, dining, and sightseeing.

Hiking

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Canadian Rockies is on foot. From easy lakeside walks to challenging mountain ascents, Banff National Park offers trails for every skill level and some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever encounter.

Banff Gondola

For panoramic views of Banff and the surrounding mountains, a ride on the Banff Gondola is a must. The journey to the summit of Sulphur Mountain provides incredible photo opportunities, scenic boardwalks, and informative exhibits.

At the top, you’ll also find several excellent dining options where you can enjoy a meal while taking in some truly spectacular views of the Rockies.

Banff Upper Hot Springs

After a day of exploring, unwind in the warm mineral waters of the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Surrounded by mountain peaks, it’s a relaxing way to soak in both the scenery and the history of the area.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the opportunity to visit the hot springs on this trip, but they’re definitely at the top of our list for next time!

Kananaskis Nordic Spa

If relaxation is on your itinerary, the Kananaskis Nordic Spa is absolutely worth a visit. The hydrotherapy circuit, outdoor pools, saunas, and tranquil mountain setting create the perfect environment to recharge and rejuvenate.

Nick and I booked the Twilight Soak (5:00 PM–9:00 PM) because it was the most cost-effective option and ended up being the perfect amount of time. We were able to spend the day hiking, unwind at the spa in the evening, and still have time to grab dinner in Canmore afterward. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
