Hi friends, readers, and travelers,
We recently sailed on Royal Caribbean International aboard the Utopia of the Seas, and overall the cruise itself was a great experience. The ship was beautiful, the entertainment was impressive, and there was plenty to do onboard.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest disappointments of the trip was our excursion day at the Royal Beach Club.
When we booked the excursion, we expected a relaxing, premium beach experience that would match the level of service and quality promoted by Royal Caribbean. Instead, the day ended up feeling overcrowded, disorganized, and far below expectations — especially considering the cost.
Getting There Was Confusing and Time-Consuming
One thing we weren’t expecting was how frustrating the transportation process to the island would be.
The boat ride and boarding process felt disorganized and confusing from the start. There was very little clear direction about where to go, how long the wait would be, or what the overall process looked like. What should have felt like a smooth transition to a relaxing beach day instead became a long and somewhat stressful experience.
Between waiting, boarding, and traveling to the island, it ended up taking much longer than we anticipated. By the time we actually arrived, it already felt like a significant portion of the day had been spent just trying to get there.
For an excursion marketed as a premium experience, we expected transportation to be much more efficient and clearly managed.

First Impressions
At first glance, the beach club looked promising. The water was beautiful, the atmosphere seemed lively, and the setup appeared modern and well-designed. But once the crowds arrived, the experience changed quickly.
Finding seating became difficult almost immediately. There were four of us in our party and we had a difficult time getting four seats together. Many chairs were already claimed early in the day, and staff didn’t seem particularly helpful in assisting guests who were still searching for a place to settle in.
For a paid excursion marketed as an upgraded experience, we expected something much more comfortable and organized.
Overcrowding and Long Waits
The biggest issue throughout the day was simply how crowded everything felt.
Lines for food and drinks were longer than expected, common areas became packed, and it was hard to find any sense of relaxation. Instead of feeling like an exclusive beach escape, it often felt more “work” than being back on the ship.
One of the reasons people book excursions like this is to avoid the chaos of overcrowded public beaches. Unfortunately, this excursion delivered the opposite experience for us.
The Biggest Disappointment: No Swimming Allowed
What made the experience even more frustrating was that guests were not allowed to swim in the water because conditions were considered too rough.
This was honestly the biggest letdown of the entire excursion. A beach club experience is centered around enjoying the ocean, so finding out that swimming was restricted took away one of the main reasons we booked the excursion in the first place.
Of course, safety should always come first, and we understand that rough ocean conditions are outside anyone’s control. However, it still significantly impacted the value of the experience for us. Without being able to enjoy the water, we were essentially left sitting on an overcrowded beach with long lines and limited seating. I also wish someone would have just told us this before we got off the boat.
For the price paid, it simply didn’t feel worth it.
Service Fell Short
Another disappointment was the level of service.
Staff interactions felt rushed and inconsistent throughout the day. We understand that busy days happen, especially with large cruise crowds, but for the price paid, we expected better attention to guests and a smoother overall operation. It took forever to get a drink…
There seemed to be a disconnect between the “premium beach club” branding and the actual guest experience.
Was It Worth the Cost?
For us, the answer is no.
Excursions can absolutely be worth splurging on when they create memorable experiences or offer something unique. In this case, we left feeling that the money would have been better spent enjoying the ship itself or exploring other port options independently.
That was especially disappointing because the excursion was something we had looked forward to before the cruise. So far, we are 2/2 with Nassau excursions. I really enjoy Royal Caribbean’s Bahamas cruise with cococay, but maybe we should just plan on staying on board in Nassau.
Final Thoughts
To be fair, not every traveler will have the same experience. Some guests may enjoy the party atmosphere or may have visited on a less crowded day.
But based on our experience, we would not recommend the Royal Beach Club excursion to others sailing on Utopia of the Seas — particularly travelers looking for a peaceful or premium beach day.
The cruise itself was still enjoyable, and we had many positive moments onboard. This excursion just ended up being the low point of the trip.
If you’re considering booking it, I’d recommend doing plenty of research, reading recent reviews, and setting realistic expectations before spending the extra money.
