Hello friends, family, and readers,
If anyone knows me, they know I thrive on good company, mini prints, and discovering local gems. Lately, I’ve realized just how many incredible small businesses Maine has to offer. I could spend days talking about my favorite food spots — but I’ll save that for another post.
For now, let’s talk about the local stores, cozy coffee shops, and hidden spots that make Maine feel so special.
There’s something about walking into a small shop or café and instantly feeling at home. Whether it’s browsing handmade goods, finding the perfect print, or sitting in a corner café with a good coffee and even better conversation, these places carry a kind of charm you just can’t replicate.
Maine has quietly built such a strong community of creatives, makers, and local businesses, and honestly, that’s become one of my favorite things about living here.
Coffee Shops in Maine That Are Absolutely Worth the Stop
One thing Maine will always get right is coffee culture. Whether it’s a tiny local café tucked into downtown Portland or a cozy spot with seasonal drinks and dog-friendly seating, there’s just something special about slowing down with a really good cup of coffee here.
These are a few of my personal favorite spots — the places I find myself recommending over and over again.
Salt Yard Cafe & Bar

Portland, Maine
One of my favorite weekend spots, without question. Their Salt Yard Latte is easily one of the best specialty drinks I’ve had, and I’m still thinking about their lemon berry yogurt bowl days later.
The atmosphere feels cozy without trying too hard, making it the perfect place to sit for a while, catch up with friends, or enjoy a slow morning.
Bonus points: they’re dog-friendly, which immediately makes any coffee shop better.
Tandem Coffee Roasters

Portland, Maine
Tandem is one of those places that feels iconic the second you walk in. Set inside a converted gas station, it has that classic Portland charm while still feeling warm and welcoming.
Their coffee and pastries are incredible, but the real standout? The biscuits and jam. Honestly, they’re to die for.
Good to know: outdoor seating is dog-friendly, but indoor seating is very limited. I’d definitely recommend visiting on a nice day.
Speckled Ax

Portland, Maine
Speckled Ax has such a distinct Portland atmosphere that it almost feels like a rite of passage to visit. Their wood-roasted coffee gives everything a richer flavor, and the shop itself has a cozy, creative energy that makes you want to stay awhile.
I will say — it’s definitely on the pricier side, but still worth stopping in at least once.
Coffee By Design

Portland, Maine
A true Maine classic. Coffee By Design has been part of Portland’s coffee scene for years and continues to be one of the most recognizable local coffee spots around. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar in the best way — reliable coffee, welcoming atmosphere, and deeply rooted in the local community.
Moonday Coffee

Portland, Maine
Tiny space, serious coffee-people energy.
Moonday has quickly become one of those spots locals genuinely love, and after visiting, it’s easy to understand why. It feels intentional, minimalist, and centered around really good coffee without all the extra noise.
Swell Nitro Coffee

Saco, Maine & South Portland, Maine
If you love seasonal drinks as much as I do, Swell Nitro Coffee deserves a spot on your list. Their holiday and specialty coffees are always so creative, and the atmosphere feels fun and welcoming year-round.
Another huge plus: they’re dog-friendly, too.
Morning Moose Coffee

Topsham, Maine
Great seasonal lattes and mini donuts. Honestly… need I say more?
Morning Moose has such a fun, cozy energy that makes it an easy stop whenever you’re nearby. It’s the perfect kind of place for a casual coffee run that somehow turns into staying longer than planned.
Cozy Spaces, Amazing Coffee, & Spots I Keep Going Back To
There’s something special about finding coffee shops that feel personal — places you genuinely look forward to returning to.
Maine has so many of them, and honestly, discovering new local spots has become one of my favorite parts of living here. If you can’t tell already, we’re huge dog people and love finding coffee shops that welcome pups, too.
And as much as I love discovering a new café, one of my favorite things to do afterward is wander through local shops nearby.
Let’s Shop Local
Maine has such a strong small-business culture, and you can feel the creativity and personality the moment you step inside these places.
From cozy bookstores and vintage finds to handmade goods, art prints, and locally made products, there’s always something unique waiting to be discovered.
What I love most is that no two shops feel the same. Some are tucked into quiet side streets, while others sit right in the middle of busy downtown areas — but all of them bring something different to the community.
They feel intentional, personal, and full of character — the kind of places you walk into “just to look” and somehow leave with a candle, tote bag, stickers, or something you didn’t even know you needed.
So after grabbing coffee, here are a few local Maine shops that are absolutely worth checking out.
Gooeygump Designs

Portland, Maine
Honestly, this place feels like if HomeGoods and Anthropologie had a locally owned Maine cousin.
Gooeygump is packed with home décor, gifts, furniture, DIY finds, seasonal pieces, and the kind of cozy items that immediately make you want to redecorate your apartment.
Every corner feels full of personality and creative inspiration.
Soleil

Portland, Maine
Soleil is one of those effortlessly beautiful shops that makes everything feel curated in the best way.
They carry clothing, home goods, accessories, and gifts that somehow feel both elevated and cozy at the same time. Even walking through the store feels inspiring.

Wanderlust Stationery & Letter Cafe

Freeport, Maine
If you love stationery, cute notebooks, cards, stickers, pens, and cozy café vibes, Wanderlust is such a fun stop.
It combines the charm of a stationery shop with the comfort of sitting down for coffee, which honestly feels like the perfect combination.
The connected coffee shop is also a great find.
The Post Supply

Portland, Maine
The Post Supply has such a clean, modern aesthetic while still feeling warm and local.
It’s filled with thoughtfully curated home décor, jewelry, accessories, and lifestyle pieces that make perfect gifts — whether for someone else or yourself.
Also worth noting:

Rustic Arrow

Freeport, Maine
Rustic Arrow is such a good stop if you love boutiques with a mix of clothing, jewelry, and handmade goods.
They focus heavily on supporting women-owned brands, local makers, and ethically sourced products, which makes shopping there feel even more intentional.
The shop also collaborates with Scribbles and Doodlez — and she’s absolutely fantastic.
Kelp Goods

Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Kelp Goods has such a fun coastal Maine feel to it.
The shop carries jewelry, clothing, and accessories that perfectly fit that relaxed beach-town aesthetic while still feeling stylish and curated. The owner is incredibly creative and kind.
It’s also connected to a local breakfast and coffee shop, which makes it an even better stop.
Final Thoughts
A huge part of Maine’s charm is how much these local businesses reflect the people behind them. Nothing feels overly polished or commercialized — and honestly, that’s what makes these places so memorable.
You can spend an entire afternoon wandering through Portland with a coffee in hand, popping into bookstores, vintage shops, and little artisan stores, and somehow still feel like there’s more left to discover.
Now I’m curious — what’s your favorite local coffee shop or small business ?
