I owed my wife a romantic comedy after dragging her to films like One Battle After Another and Devil’s Advocate, so we checked out You, Me, and Tuscany. Going in, my expectations were pretty low, but to my surprise, it landed squarely in the realm of a mediocre but watchable rom-com.
The film stars Halle Bailey, who plays a woman that, after one brief encounter with an Italian man at a hotel, impulsively flies to Italy to find him. Things get even more far-fetched when she convinces his entire family that they’re engaged while he’s not even there. In today’s world, it’s hard not to think social media would unravel that lie in about five minutes.
If you can get past the unrealistic setup, the movie settles into a very familiar formula: thinking you want one thing, only to realize you’ve fallen for someone else entirely. There were a couple of genuine laughs, but a lot of the humor feels forced, relying on clumsy situations and lazy writing rather than clever dialogue. It just felt like they were trying to capture every generic romantic comedy movie trope instead of making their own cute story. For instance, one of the family members doesn’t say a word until the very end when they suddenly need to. Been there, done that.
While I don’t think Halle Bailey is a bad actor, she doesn’t quite click in this role. Romantic comedy timing is everything, and hers feels just a bit off here. Her performance falls short, similar to Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You, where the delivery just doesn’t fully land. Even the emotional moments toward the end come across as a little forced and lacking energy.
Overall, this isn’t a terrible movie, it’s just forgettable. The kind of film that, six months from now, most people won’t remember. It doesn’t do anything new or particularly well, and it never really rises above being a generic romantic comedy.
I’d say skip the theater and wait for it to hit streaming. If you’re scrolling and can’t find anything else, it’s fine to throw on, but don’t expect it to leave much of an impression.
