Ghosts, Voices, and time travel? … Say No more!

With baseball starting up this week, it felt like the perfect time to throw on Field of Dreams again. And with Amy Madigan just winning an Oscar for Weapons, it made revisiting this one even better.

I still can’t get over the fact that this movie ever got made. Like seriously—what was that pitch meeting like? A guy hears voices, builds a baseball field in his cornfield, hangs out with ghosts, and somehow there’s time travel involved too? There’s no way at least one executive in that room wasn’t like, “yeah… sure, let’s do it.” It sounds insane.

And the crazy part is—it totally works.

At its core, this isn’t really even about baseball—it’s about fathers and sons, regret, and second chances. Baseball’s just kind of there in the background, tying everything together. Kevin Costner plays it so straight that you just buy into all of it, no matter how weird it gets.

Because yeah, none of it really makes sense if you stop and think about it. The players can’t leave the field because of some invisible force, they come and go through a cornfield like it’s a doorway to heaven… it’s all kind of ridiculous. But you don’t care. You’re too invested.

I also forgot how funny parts of it are. Like when the players accidentally swear in front of the daughter, or the whole “melting in the cornfield” bit—just little moments that keep it from getting too heavy.

The ending? Honestly, only an actor like Kevin Costner could have pulled it off. In the hands of the wrong person, it probably feels forced or not authentic. But here, it just lands. Without spoiling anything, when he asks, “do you wanna play catch?”… sorry not sorry, I cry every single time. And that final shot, where you see miles and miles of cars all lined up to come see this thing—it’s just perfect.

If you haven’t seen this movie, I’d honestly say take the two hours and watch it. It’s one of those that sticks with you. As of right now, you can stream it on Netflix.
