For the next review from Flicks_withNick is the 2024 romantic comedy drama Fly me to the Moon. The movie stars Channing Tatum as Cole Davis, Scartett Johansson as Kelly Jones, Ray Romano as Henry Smalls, and Woody Harrelson as Moe Berkus. The movie is directed by Gree Berlanti.
The movie is set in 1969 during the lead up and launch of Apollo 11. The movie starts out with Cole and his team prepping equipment for the Apollo 11 launch. They are over budget, and they need additional funds to be able to support the Apollo 11 launch. To get additional funds, the US President sends Moe to New York to get the best person in Marketing. This is where we are introduced to Kelly Jones. Kelly first appears to be a very slick, and successful sales person, only to find out she will lie her way to get the sale. We see her force her way through a marketing meeting with a car company, and she wins them over with her cons and lies. After this performance, Moe convinces Kelly to bring her talents down to Cocoa Beach, FL to work with the NASA program.
Kelly meets Cole, and right away Cole is discouraged. He takes his job very seriously, and believes Kelly is a distraction, and deluding the NASA product with her product placements. Even trying to get the Astronauts to wear watches in space. Eventually just like any other love story the couple butt heads at first, but over time they build a strong connection. Their bond is growing with the backdrop of the buildup to the Apollo 11 launch. As their connection builds, we go more in depth of the characters, and we learn about their history, and why they are the way they are today. Of course we get the tug and poll, will they be a couple? Or is this just a fling?
The drama of the movie occurs when NASA starts staging the moon landing, just in case something goes wrong with the actual Moon landing. The drama actually keeps you guessing of how this story will end, and keeps you on the edge of the seat the entire time.
People should know that the backdrop of the film is set on a true historical event, but the characters, and their story are fictional. The third act of the movie deals a lot with NASA staging the Moon landing, and yes there are conspiracy theories out there, but there has been no proof of the staged Moon Landing conspiracy. Regardless I thought it was still a beautiful story with plenty of comedy.
The best part of the movie was the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson.Channing has come a long way from being a below average sex symbol actor from the movies like Coach Carter and Step Up. I thought his comedy chops first popped in the 21 Jump Street movies, and now he has his drama chops in this movie. His performance definitely made me cry. No shame here.
This is a wonderful film full of heartfelt moments, laughter, and some historic drama. This movie probably won’t get any recognition at awards times, but I think everyone should check this out in the theater.
I give this movie a 3.5 / 5.
Addendum:
We visited our local Regal theatre, and partook in Movie Mystery Month. At a reduced price you can see a movie that is premiering soon, but the catch is, you don’t know what movie it is, till you see the open credits. I don’t like surprises, so I always cheat and read the Reddit posts, and they’ll make very educated guesses, and they are usually not wrong. My wife is the opposite, and doesn’t want to be told at all. Have any of you partaken in MMM? Are you like me and have to know the movie? Or are you like my wife?
