Haven’t I Seen This?

Did I just watch the 2008 movie?

Next review from Flicks_withNick is the horror movie, The Strangers Chapter 1. The movie stars Madelaine Petsch as Maya, and Froy Gutierrez as Ryan. The movie is directed by Renny Harlin. It currently sits with a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score, and a  45% audience score.

The movie starts with a young couple Maya and Ryan driving through the rural part of Oregon. Maya has a job interview in Portland, and they are road tripping from Chicago. After getting a bite to eat, their car won’t start. They get help from the locals for repairs, and a place to stay, as their car won’t get fixed till the next day. They were told there’s only one Airbnb in the area, and it’s a cabin in the woods. From that point on, the movie is a formulaic home invasion, that relies heavily on jump scares that you could see from a mile away. The climatic ending of the move was uninspired, boring, no redeeming qualities.

If you saw the 2008 movie The Strangers, then you have pretty much seen this movie, but just done poorly. This was a very predictable movie that was a retread of the original movie. The main characters do the Stereotypical poor mistakes, while being chased around in the cabin. One example of their poor mistake was being stuck in a room, with the killer axing down the door. As you see the couple struggling to find a solution to escape, THERE IS A WINDOW RIGHT BEHIND THEM! And mind you, they are on the first level of a cabin, so no need for big jumps.

My recommendation is to save your money, and watch the original 2008 movie. You’ll get a better version of this sequel, and you don’t have to pay the additional money to go to the theater. I found out after, that this movie is actually not even a prequel, but actually another installment in the franchise, and this is chapter 1 of a trilogy. The other sequels have already been filmed. At least you can only go up from there. They even tried to say this movie was based on a true story, but after some basic research, this is loosely based off of different murder crimes. Shouldn’t this movie be labeled “inspired by a true story”? What other movies could you think that placed the tag “Based on a true sorry”, but was completely different from the real life event?

If I hadn’t watched the 2008 movie, I’d probably give this movie a 2.2/5, but because I have, I’m giving this movie a 1.2 / 5.
