Whoof Whoof! The latest review from Flicks_withNick is the 2024 movie Arthur the King. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Mikael Lindord, Nathalie Emmanuel as Oliva, and Simu Lui as Leo. The movie is directed by Simon Cellan Jones. The movie has a rotten tomato score of 64%, and an audience score of 97%. If anyone knows my wife and I, we are avid dog lovers. She’s been excited to see this movie, ever since she saw the trailer. This movie could have been the biggest turd, but she woulda still loved it, cause it featured a cute dog.
The movie starts out with Mikael and his team racing for an intensive triathlon in the Dominican Republic. Mikael fails to listen to his team, and the team fails at the race. Years later, he gets his crew together for one last attempt at the race. Recruitment montage ensues, as he acquires his team one by one.
As the team is prepping for the race, the movie cuts back and forth between Mikael and the dog. I did appreciate this aspect of the movie, as you treat the dog like the other characters, and you feel invested, when he meets Mikael.
During the race, there was a long and intensive scene involving zip lines. I thought the scene dragged on just a tad, and ended up not fulfilled by the time it was done. My wife would say the complete opposite, and it was a real crowd pleaser, and that kept her at the edge of her seat.
The dog eventually joins the race, and becomes an important piece to help them try to win. Towards the end of the movie, Mikael has to make a very tough decision with the race, which affects everyone else.
The race ended, and I thought the movie was over, but the movie went on for another 20 min. This was an unnecessary emotional roller coaster that I felt wasn’t needed. Nothing would have changed if they finished the race, and the movie cuts to the last two minutes of the movie, and skipped everything else.
I thought this movie was a generic feel good Disney like movie, that’s been told hundreds of times, but just packaged differently. Think of all the Disney sports movies, or like Iron Will, without the snow. Did I laugh a little? Yes. Did I think the dog was cute? Yes. Did this movie offer anything different? No. It’s a decent movie to go see with your kids, or if you’re an avid dog lover like my wife. I didn’t hate the movie, but it just didn’t move the needle for me.
I give this movie a 2.4/5
