“He’s not imaginary, and he’s not your friend”

Now the awards season for 2023 is over, the next review is the 2024 horror movie Imaginary. The movie stars Delanda Wise as Jessica, Taegen Burns as Taylor, Pyper Braun as Alice, Tom Payne as Max, and Chauncy the Teddy Bear. The movie is directed by Jeff Wadlow. As of this writing the movie has a 26% Rotten Tomatoes score, and a 52% Audience score.

The movie starts out with the formulaic dark and gritty chase of a woman through a house, and cuts away to find out it was all a dream. We find out that the woman being chased was Jessica, and the house was where she used to live as a little kid. Her husband and two step daughters Alice and Taylor are now moving to her family home, with the hopes of a fresh start, and hopefully stop the nightmares.

As they move in, Alice, who’s the younger step daughter, finds a Teddy bear, and names her imaginary friend Chauncey. We see Jessica as a Step mom try to get closer to Taylor & Alice. While Taylor is trying to be the rebellion teenager, Alice is bonding more with Chauncey. As Alice gets closer to Chauncey, we see odd behavior, and we slowly see the villain reveal themselves. During this time, we get a weird and confusing drug scene. Jessica leaves the house, and Taylor brings a neighbor over. He whips out a baggie full of drugs, and sticks his tongue out to show the drugs. I was like “how long has that been in his mouth? Does that taste like shit at this point?”

All events led up to the third act of the movie, where Jessica, Taylor, and Alice confront the villain. I felt like everything prior was boring, and the payoff wasn’t worth it. Towards the end of the movie, there was a twist scene, and I thought that the-movie was going to end, and I honestly thought it would have been a great ending, but they unfortunately needed the happy ending. I think they missed out on a great opportunity.

Overall I thought this was a below average horror movie, and this is a miss from Blumhouse productions, where we are typically used to a certain standard of horror movie. The jump scares didn’t pay off, and felt forced. The dialogue was clunky, and I felt the story never progressed.

I give this movie a 2.0/5
