Wake me up if I snore

The latest review from Flicks_withNick is the action comedy movie Argylle. (The Movie trying to be a comedy, is probably the funniest thing about it). The movie was released on Feb 2, 2024, and was directed by Matthew Vaughn, who’s more noticeable movies are the Kingsmen franchise. The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, Sam Rockwell as Aiden Wilde, Bryan Cranston as Director Ritter, and Henry Canvill as Argylle.

The movie starts out with an over the top James Bond rip off climax scene, where Argylle escapes from a group of henchmen, and chases down the villain. Included with this is a below average motorcycle scene. This is when I realized, this movie was gonna suck. When Argylle is confronted with a double cross, we cut away, and see Elly Conway writing out her book. She is having issues with finishing the scene, and the end of the book. While trying to finish her new book, She’s on a book tour for her latest book in the Argylle series, which is about a spy of the same name. We get a cool scene of Elly trying to figure out the ending of her movie, and Argylle is playing the scene as she writes it.  She is still having trouble writing the ending, and reaches out to her mom. The mom is played by the wonderful actress Katherine O’Hara. Elly agrees to go see her mom for help with the end of the book, and takes a train. While on the train she meets Aiden, and he tells her he’s a spy, as she’s being attacked by a myriad of henchmen. This gives us an idea of what we think the rest of the movie is going to be.

The first third of the movie was interesting, with a cat and mouse chase of a bunch of henchmen hunting down an author, and being aided by her new spy fan, and secret agent. The movie turned downhill for me with the first plot twist revealed, and trust me there’s 100 more twists coming. The movie felt very cartoonish, with a cheesy CGI cat to top it off. There were two scenes in particular that were so bad, and the CGI was so dreadful, I thought I was gonna fall off my seat. All I’m gonna say is color and Oil. How bad was the CGI? Think about all the CGI scenes from the second Kingsmen movie.

If you look at the movie poster, you’d think that Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa are a big part of the film, but you should know going in, they’re both in about 10 minutes of the film. Seems like the people mostly in the film, are in the back of the movie poster.

Overall I thought this movie had a great premise, a writer who makes spy novels gets entangled in a mission with real spies, and on the run for her life. What ended up happening was a hot CGI mess of twist reveal after twist reveal. The humor was lackluster, and the action set pieces were heavy CGI over the top sets, that was never satisfying. If you disliked the second Kingsmen movie, then you’re gonna hate this movie. The action style is very similar, but at least Kingsmen had some hilarious scenes. My wife would say if you want a good nap, this is your movie. She only lasted for an hour before she leaned over and said, wake me if I snore. I was able to power through to only get an embarrassing mid credit scene that tries to intertwine Matthew Vaughn’s movie franchise.

This movie is a pass for me, and please save your money for another movie.

I give this movie my rating so far, 1.1/ 5.
