Hello friends, family, and fellow readers! I cannot believe we are two weeks into assignment 7 in Anchorage, Alaska. We are absolutely loving it so far. We’ve already done a few activities, and explored a lot. It’s honestly breathtaking! Check out a few photos from the last few weeks!
I’m really enjoying the hospital so far. I’m learning that Alaska runs things a little differently. I’m gonna give you two interesting facts that I learned this week.
DID YOU KNOW?
We all know Alaska is big… but how big? It could fit 19 other states. Check out this map below, It impacts nursing care a lot for many reasons. When we discharge a patient from the hospital, it may take a person 24 hours to go home (often by plane, boat, or a long drive). Therefore, it makes discharges difficult, and causes a crowded hospital.

DID YOU KNOW?
This fact kind of runs into my second fact. If it takes people a long time to discharge, you would think it takes people a long time to get to the hospital. Do you know the leading cause of death in Alaska ? I found this interesting. Check out the chart, and compare it to your home state. I compared it to our home state, New Hampshire. I want to specifically point out the unintentional harm. How does this category look in Alaska and your home state? This really surprised me, until I worked a couple days at the hospital in Alaska. If you lived in a village in Alaska, you would call for help for an injury, and an ambulance would pick you up, and bring you to a local hospital/clinic. After you are triaged, the local hospital determines if you need a higher level of care. At this point, the local hospital would transport you to an airport, where you would fly to Anchorage. You would think that you would be transported to a helicopter pad… but that’s an incorrect assumption. You would fly into the local airport, where an ambulance would pick you up, and bring you to the hospital in anchorage. Think about an individual that’s very sick or hurt…it’s a lot of moving and transfers. They were right… Alaska runs things different. I give the Alaska population credit.

I can’t wait to tell you about all things Alaska. We are currently planning a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska. If you have visited Fairbanks and have some suggestions, leave a comment!
