Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One Review

If you choose to accept this mission? I say yes! The 7th installment of the Mission: Impossible movie came out last week, Dead Reckoning Part One. It returns some familiar faces with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, & Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust. New faces include; Haley Atwell as Grace, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Esai Morales as Gabriel. The movie brings back Christopher McQuarrie as director, with this now his 3rd run at the franchise. McQuarrie also wrote the film alongside Erik Jendresen. As of this writing, this movie has a rotten tomato score of 96% with an audience score of 94%.

The movie opens in the Bering Sea with a Russian submarine, and right away you get vibes of 90’s/00’s submarine movies. In the opening scene is where we are introduced to the villain of this movie called The Entity. The scene shows how powerful this AI is, and the villain of this movie is more than just an arms dealer. We are provided with the Mcguffin of the movie, it is this key that is split in two. If you have both pieces of the key, you can control The Entity. This becomes a cat and mouse game for Ethan and crew vs. Gabriel. Gabriel acts as the Human form of The entity, taking commands from the AI. The chase between Ethan and crew vs. Gabriel brings us to different locations including Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam, and Rome. Don’t worry, the movie has plenty of Tom Cruise running scenes.

My overall thought is that this was another great

installment to the MI franchise. Yes sometimes the plot can be confusing, but the ride is still entertaining. Can anyone actually remember what happened in any of the movies? Most likely not, but you still go, and enjoy the movie. The only movies I can remember fully were the 2nd and 3rd films in the franchise, only because they came out when I was younger, and had nothing better to do, but rewatch the movies. I thought Haley Atwell had great chemistry with Tom Cruise, and with this, I think this installment was the funniest in the franchise. The humor is just right, and not overbearing. This is a huge ensemble cast, but everyone has plenty of screen time, and all have plenty of motivation. My favorite character in the movie is Paris. She brings a nice charm to the movie, and it helps that she’s a badass. A negative I had of the movie was Gabriel’s character. They introduce him as a person in the past of Ethan Hunt’s life, and played a major role. I find it weird to introduce someone in the 7th installment, and then try to tell me he’s important to their past. He seemed more of a classic Bond villain petting his white cat, and didn’t have his story flushed out. I understand that this is only the first part of a two part movie, so there’s plenty of time to flush out his character. The cinematography and the editing of the movie is extrodinary, and provides breathtaking action scenes one after another. You never feel bored, even with the very long running time of 2h 43m. Just like any other MI film, we get to see Tom Cruise perform some crazy stunt. I won’t spoil the stunt, if no one watched the behind the scenes.  I would say it’s not the most fascinating stunt, compared to others in the past, but he’s still pushing the envelope.

My final thought is that this is a movie that is a must see in the theater, so you can get the full experience that Tom Cruise intended. I give this movie a 4 outta 5.
